After a short voting process among the members of the MexSoc UK, the proposal of the Cambridge University Mexican Society to host the 7th Symposium of Mexican Students and Studies has been selected [Proposal Cambridge].

We congratulate the Cambridge University Mexican Society for hosting the 2009 event. The calling for participation will be made by April, 2009.

in a conversation with students in occasion to celebrate his eightieth birthday and to acknowledge his involvement in the foundation of the Mexican Students Society in the UK.

Carlos Fuentes has long been acclaimed as one of the greatest literary and political figures of the Spanish-speaking world. The leading figure of Latin America’s literary boom of the 1960s and 1970s, his novels, including the classics Terra Nostra, The Death of Artemio Cruz and The Old Gringo, are passionate explorations of the history and identity of the Latin American nations, and of their contentious relationship with the United States of America.

Carlos Fuentes

The son of a Mexican diplomat, Fuentes spent much of his childhood in Washington, D.C. and in various Latin American cities, returning every summer to his grandmother’s home in Mexico. As Mexico’s best-known public intellectual, he served as Ambassador to France in the 1970s. He has actively participated in the academic life of Princeton, Harvard, Brown, Columbia and Cambridge universities. His work has been distinguished with the most prestigious awards, including the following: the National Prize in Literature in Mexico (1984); the Miguel de Cervantes Prize (1987), awarded annually to honour the lifetime achievement of an outstanding writer in the Spanish language; France’s Legion of Honour Award (1992); Italy’s Cavour Award (1994); Spain’s PrĂ­ncipe de Asturias Award (1994); and the inaugural Latin Civilization Award (1999), presented jointly by the Presidents of Brazil, Mexico and France.

The Mexican Society at Imperial College London (MexSoc IC) and the Society of Mexican Students in the United Kingdom (MexSoc UK) are proud to invite you to the 6th Symposium of Mexican Students and Studies.

The Symposium of Mexican Students and Studies is an annual meeting associated with the MexSoc UK. The aim of this meeting is to provide a forum for Mexican students to present their work, exchange knowledge and ideas. Also, the symposium is an opportunity for students from all nationalities working on Mexico-related projects to share and discuss their research with Mexican nationals. Finally, the event is an excellent opportunity for networking.

This year the Symposium is organized by the MexSoc IC and will take place at the South Kensington Campus. The event will consist of an academic program which includes oral presentations, workshop sessions and a meeting with Mexican personalities of the scientific community. If you are interested in presenting your work and/or participating in the workshops follow the registration process:

3) Register for the Symposium by sending an abstract about your research/topic (~300 words)

Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Oxford, Sheffield and Southampton.

The day was warm and sunny, which basically made our day!

2008 MexSoc UK Football Tournament

This year, the MexSoc UK tournament is being hosted by the MexSoc at Birmingham, the 2007 runners up.

The tournament will be a one-day event on April, 26th starting at 10am. Everyone is invited to come.

Environmental Students Wanted!

The Embassy of Mexico in the UK is requesting the name of five Mexican students in the area of Environmental Science. The British Council will contact them regarding an event to be held in London to reward the winners of a competition in Mexico in that specific area. Three students -between 16 and 18 years old- will be awarded and come to London to receive their prize by the end of this month.
